Editing/Proofreading

      Editing can be done at various levels of service, depending on the degree of assistance you require. We will return two versions of your text file: one showing the suggested changes (using MS Word Track Changes feature) and one showing the text with all the changes accepted. Projects that need to be done on hard copy will have suggested corrections clearly marked. We often include notes with suggestions or questions about issues which you need to consider, such as word choice, clarity, or consistency.

Proofreading
      Proofreading is the final polish for writing. It corrects errors in capitalization, punctuation, spelling and spacing, along with minor grammatical errors. Sometimes this is all that is required. Even after a text has been edited, the final copy with editing changes that have been approved should be proofread before it is printed or posted.

Mechanical editing
      This minimum level of editing, or "light" editing, corrects basic grammar and usage errors, including those made in subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and verb tense. It does not include rewording to help clarify the meaning or to eliminate awkward wording, although these problems may be noted for the author to address.

Substantive editing
      This level of editing includes suggested changes to improve the readability and clarity of content, to eliminate repetition, and to sustain consistency in the text, as well as all areas covered in Mechanical Editing. It does not include reorganization of the content, although a suggestion that this type of improvement would be helpful may be noted.

Developmental editing
      In this level of editing, changes to the organization of the writing will be suggested. It includes all the areas covered in Mechanical and Substantive editing.
